Kappa History

Black-sponsored Greek letter organizations on the Indiana University campus may have begun in 1903, but there were too few registrants to assure continuing organization. In that year a club was formed called Alpha Kappa Nu, which aimed to strengthen African Americans’ voice at the university and in the city of Bloomington. The reason for choosing that Greek letter name is not known, but it the club expired after a short time. There is no record of any similar organization at Indiana until the chartering of Kappa Alpha Nu in 1911.

Originally organized as Kappa Alpha Nu on the campus of Indiana University on January 5, 1911, the fraternity received its charter and incorporation on May 15, 1911. On April 15, 1915, the fraternity renamed itself Kappa Alpha Psi.

The founders sought a formula that immediately would raise the sights of black collegians, stimulating them to reach accomplishments higher than they had imagined. With achievement as its purpose, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting college men of culture, patriotism and honor within a fraternal bond. Subsequently, chapters spread in succession to the University of Illinois, the University of Iowa, and Wilberforce University campuses. By 1919, the Kappa Alpha Psi experience had generated enough serious interest among black college degree holders that alumni chapters began to form.

Historically, members of the fraternity have been African American predominantly. One of the goals has been to train its members, particularly undergraduates, to assume leadership roles in their respective communities and achieve a high degree of excellence in their academic pursuits.

The Winter Park (FL) Alumni Chapter received its charter on March 14th, 1992 after a yearlong effort to bring a second Kappa alumni chapter to Central Florida because of the region’s rapid growth and community needs. Starting with 16 charter members, Winter Park Alumni has grown modestly with more than 50 active members in 2008. The chapter’s target area for community service is the northeastern corner of Central Florida from Winter Park to Deland. The membership is widely diverse in terms of professional fields represented, which include law, finance, medicine, architecture, public relations, education, and engineering.
